When your teeth are damaged or decayed, timely restorations can save your tooth from extraction. Traditionally, dental crowns were the go-to solutions for correcting significant tooth damage because they encapsulate the entire tooth to restore function and aesthetics.
Not all dental situations require a dental crown. Sometimes, your tooth has dental damage that’s too large for a filling but not significant for a crown. Porcelain onlays from Aesthetic Dental Creations, Jackson, New Jersey, are ideal for these in-between cases. Beautiful onlays placed by Dr. Balaji Srinivasan are a conservative and affordable alternative to dental crowns, improving function and aesthetics while preserving your tooth structure.
Unlike a dental crown, an onlay doesn’t cover the entire tooth. This conservative option fits within the tooth grooves and extends to one or more cusps. Like a filling or crown, a dental onlay protects the tooth and prevents the damage from progressing. Â
Dental onlays are created from tooth-colored materials to resemble your natural tooth. When we restore your tooth with an onlay, no one will distinguish the natural tooth from the restoration.
Dental onlays function similarly to dental fillings, but the two are different. Of course, a dental onlay covers a large area, but the big difference is how they are created. Dental fillings are made inside your mouth and only require one appointment to place. In contrast, dental onlays are lab-made, requiring more than one appointment to restore your tooth.
The process starts with a consultation with the dentist to determine the best restoration for your tooth. Besides visual inspection, Dr. Srinivasan uses digital imaging tools like X-rays to establish the extent of damage and plan your treatment.
If the dentist establishes your tooth can be treated with a dental onlay, the next step is tooth preparation. As mentioned, restoring your tooth with an onlay is a conservative procedure. The dentist removes a small portion of the tooth to create space for your restoration, leaving the healthy structure intact. Next, we’ll take digital impressions of your prepped tooth to be used by the dental lab to custom-make your restoration. Until your onlay is ready, we’ll place a temporary filling to protect your tooth.
Once we receive your onlay, you’ll come to our office for placement. The dentist will replace the temporary filling with your onlay. After a few adjustments, the doctor will bond the onlay to the tooth for a durable restoration. The last step is to polish your restoration to create a smooth, natural appearance.
