Versatile dental crowns that are as pleasing to the eye as they are strong!

Just as at Aesthetic Dental Creations, we are “multi-taskers,” offering an array of quality dental services in a comfortable and inviting setting to patients from in and around Jackson, New Jersey, dental crowns are the “multi-taskers” of the restorative dentistry realm. In some cases, crowns may even be used for primarily cosmetic issues, for instance, when a tooth has considerable shape-related irregularities but is otherwise healthy. Often, though, crowns come to the rescue to “save” damaged teeth and support oral health, excellent function, and a smile that you will want to show off.

The basics

Our natural teeth have crowns. They are the visible, white-colored part of the tooth above the gum line. Generally, if our dentist, Dr. Balaji Srinivasan recommends crowns treatment, this part of the tooth will be restored or otherwise replicated to look, feel, and function like the crown formerly did before being damaged by decay, gum disease, or other forms of trauma.

As such, the dental crown designed by our team is made from dental material that may include dental ceramics like porcelain. The crown is “prepared,” so it is shaped and color-matched to blend in well in the smile. The underlying natural tooth is also “prepared,” which generally involves removing diseased or decayed tissue. The tooth is also shaped. In turn, the crown fits nicely over the tooth. The dental crown is fabricated based on impressions of the tooth after being cleaned and shaped. Temporary crowns are worn mainly to protect the prepared tooth while the permanent crown is made. Once the permanent crown is completed, the temporary is removed, and the permanent crown is cemented in place after precision adjustments are made (as needed). Dental crowns are designed to last as long as you maintain good hygiene at home and dental check-ups at our office as instructed by Dr. Srinivasan.

In addition to some of the scenarios referenced above, crowns may be used to:

  • Replace teeth in a dental bridge or implant-supported restorations
  • Provide the finishing touch following root canal therapy to save a badly infected tooth
  • Hold together a severely broken or fractured tooth
  • Replace worn dental restorations; for instance, large fillings that are vulnerable to cracks

Crowns are primarily a more extensive type of dental restoration, and at Aesthetic Dental Creations, we treat patients conservatively, with minimal alteration and trauma to natural tissues. So, we encourage you to get into a healthy routine and visit us as soon as possible for preventive care that minimizes the need for any restorative treatment-Call (732) 451-3570 to book your appointment at our office in Jackson. We look forward to partnering with you!

Frequently asked questions about dental crowns

What is a dental crown, and when is it needed?

A dental crown is a customized, tooth-colored cap that fits over a damaged or decayed tooth to rebuild its size, shape, strength, and appearance. Although tiny, a dental crown wears several hats in dentistry.

You may need a dental crown to:

  • Protect a weakened tooth: A dental crown can protect a tooth weakened by a large filling, root canal, or natural wear.
  • Repair severe damage: The dentist can use a dental crown to repair significant damage that is too significant for a filling or onlay.
  • Replace a missing tooth: The dentist can combine a dental crown with an implant or bridge to replace missing teeth.
  • Enhance aesthetics: Dr. Balaji Srinivasan can use a dental crown to improve the appearance of a discolored or misshapen tooth.

Is placing a dental crown painful?

Not at all. The procedure is typically done under local anesthesia to keep you comfortable. Some patients may experience minor sensitivity afterward, but it usually fades quickly. We’ll provide you with post-op care to ease your transition after crown treatment.

Does a dental crown look natural?

Yes! Modern crowns are designed to match the color and shape of your natural teeth, making them virtually indistinguishable. Porcelain crowns, in particular, are popular for their lifelike translucency and beauty. Even when used on front teeth, our crowns are so natural-looking that no one will know they aren’t your original teeth.

Are dental crowns long-lasting?

Dental crowns can last 10-15 years or more. Their lifespan depends on the material used and how well you maintain your oral hygiene. Also, factors like location and teeth grinding can affect the longevity of your dental crowns.

How do I care for my dental crown?

Caring for your crown is much like caring for your natural teeth. Here are steps to keep your dental crowns healthy and strong.

  • Brush twice daily, and don’t forget to floss
  • Avoid biting or chewing non-food items
  • Be consistent with regular dental check-ups and cleanings
  • Consider a mouthguard if you grind your teeth
  • Limit the intake of hard and chewy foods

Are dental crowns worth it?

Dental crowns in Jackson, New Jersey, are popular for tooth repair, but they do so much more. Here are the benefits of dental crowns.

  • Save a damaged tooth: Trauma, teeth grinding, and decay can sometimes be too much for a natural tooth. A dental crown can repair severe damage, saving your tooth from extraction.
  • Stronger teeth: Dental crowns shield your tooth from further wear and breaks, keeping your tooth healthy for years.
  • Better aesthetics: Dental crowns are created from aesthetically appealing materials to achieve a natural, seamless finish.
  • Long-lasting fix: Quality dental crowns save your tooth from unexpected breakdowns and repairs.
