If you’re suffering from chronic migraines, visiting a dentist might not seem like a logical place to seek relief. However, many cases of radiating face, head, neck, ear, shoulder, and back pain originate from joints in our bodies called TMJ (temporomandibular joints), which connect your upper skull with your lower jaw. At Aesthetic Dental Creations in Jackson, New Jersey, Dr. Balaji Srinivasan has years of experience treating migraine pain caused by maxillofacial and oral stressors and imbalances that trigger TMJ issues.
The ligaments, bones, soft tissues, muscles, nerves, discs, and other parts of the system we call the human body must work together to create the comfortable and efficient operation of this wonderfully complex biological machine.
However, when just one part of this brilliant system becomes stressed or “imbalanced,” it can impact many operations, such as how it feels to open and close your mouth and use your jaws. Many symptoms of a compromised TMJ (a condition called Temporomandibular Joint Disorder or TMJD) include:
If Dr. Srinivasan determines you’re having TMJ-related issues, he may prescribe an orthotic appliance to reposition your jaw non-surgically allowing for corrections in your bite, which is likely the cause of the symptoms mentioned above.
Using this objective data, he uses an Ultra Low-Frequency TENS machine and jaw-tracking equipment to hone in on a better bite position. Once you are fitted for the orthotic, you will start noticing relief from your symptoms.
